Privacy Policy
Last updated 6 October 2026
The short version: you can play Typing Quest without an account, and then nothing about you leaves your browser. If you sign in with Discord or Google, we keep your display name, your profile picture link and your game progress so you can play on any device and appear on the leaderboards. We never receive your password or email address, we don't show adverts, and we don't sell or share your data.
Who we are
Typing Quest is a typing game at typing.org.uk, run by an individual in the United Kingdom. For anything about your data, email info@typing.org.uk.
Playing as a guest
Without an account, your progress and settings are saved only in your own browser's storage on your device. We don't receive them. Clearing your browser's site data deletes them.
What we keep when you sign in
You can sign in with Discord or Google. When you do, they tell us only your account's public ID number, display name and profile picture link. We store:
- your display name and profile picture link (you can change the name in the game);
- which sign-in service you used and its ID number for your account, so you can sign in again;
- your game save (your progress, cards, settings you choose to sync and the cosmetic look shown beside your name);
- the typing tests you submit to leaderboards and competitions: speed, accuracy, test length and when you took them;
- competitions you create, and if you joined through a friend's invite link, which account invited you;
- when your account was created and when you last signed in;
- how you first found the site, from your first visit on that browser: the website that sent you here (its name and at most the first two parts of the page address, not the full link), which of our pages you opened first, and any campaign tag on the link;
- a short scrambled code made from your internet address when you last signed in. It can't be turned back into the address, and we use it only to stop people inviting their own second account for invite rewards and to spot linked accounts when dealing with cheating or abuse;
- a simple activity log for your account (for example: signed in, finished a test, levelled up, changed your name), so cheating and abuse can be looked into. Entries are deleted after 120 days;
- if you become a supporter: your Stripe customer and subscription numbers, tier and status (Stripe handles the payment itself; we never see your card details).
We do not receive or store your password, email address, friends list, messages or anything else from your Discord or Google account.
What other players can see
Your display name, profile picture and cosmetic look appear on leaderboards and competition results, along with your scores. Clicking a name on a leaderboard opens that player’s profile card, which shows the same name, picture and look, plus a summary of their game progress: level, best speed, cards collected, Guardians beaten, Ascensions, achievements, time played, personal bests on each leaderboard, how many competitions they have entered, and when they joined and last played. Nothing else about you is shown to other players.
Why we use it
We use this information only to run the game: to save your progress, to sign you in, to show leaderboards and competitions, to reward invitations, and to keep the leaderboards fair by spotting automated or impossible runs. Under UK data protection law, our lawful basis is that this is necessary to provide the service you asked for when you created an account, and our legitimate interest in keeping the game fair and secure.
Cookies and storage
We use one cookie, which keeps you signed in. It is strictly necessary, so no cookie banner is needed. A second short-lived cookie is used only during sign-in to protect it. The game also uses your browser's local storage to save your progress and settings on your device. There are no advertising or tracking cookies, and the game's fonts are served from our own site.
Security and abuse protection
Sign-ins are protected with secure, HTTP-only cookies. To stop abuse, our server briefly counts requests by IP address; these counts are kept for minutes, not stored long term. Our web host may keep standard server logs, which can include IP addresses, for a short time for security.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and save for as long as you have an account. Signing out keeps them so you can come back. Delete your account and everything linked to it is erased.
Deleting your account
In the game, open your profile, choose Account & cloud save, then Delete account. This permanently removes your account, cloud save, leaderboard and competition entries, and invite records from our server straight away. Your browser keeps its own local copy of your progress until you clear it. You can also email us and we will delete it for you.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can ask to see the data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, receive a copy of it, or object to how we use it. Email info@typing.org.uk and we'll reply within one month. If you're unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
Typing Quest is suitable for all ages, but accounts are intended for people aged 13 or over, in line with Discord's and Google's own age rules. Younger players can play as a guest, which keeps everything on their own device.
Where your data is stored
Your account data is stored on our web host's servers. Signing in passes you briefly through Discord or Google, whose own privacy policies apply to their part.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. Significant changes will also be announced in the game.
