Start at the home row

The Learn mode begins with just a handful of keys and adds more as your child is ready, with up to three stars for each lesson. It is the way touch typing is taught: fingers on the home row, eyes on the screen.

Practice they will want to do

What speed to expect

Every child is different, and accuracy matters far more than speed at first. As a rough guide, many younger children start below 15 WPM, and 20 to 30 WPM with good accuracy is a great target for older primary school children. Focus on clean, relaxed typing and the speed comes on its own.

Questions

What age can children learn to type?

Many children are ready to start touch typing at around 7 or 8, when their hands can comfortably reach the keys. Short, regular sessions work best.

How long should kids practise?

Ten minutes a day is plenty. The daily goal and streaks are designed around short, regular practice.

Do they need to make an account?

No. Progress saves in the browser as a guest. An account is only needed to save to the cloud and use the leaderboards.
